Advanced devices - like the iPhone and some of the other “smart phones” - are connected directly to the Internet. Subscribe to the podcast on the phone, and it does the rest. Very simple, really. This is definitely the future of podcasting.
Super Easy, But Not As Cool
If you haven’t splurged on a smart phone yet, have no fear! Listening to our podcasts still doesn’t have to be complicated at all. All you need to do push the play buttons, and you can listen to all the podcasts we have posted on this website. Of course, that means you have to come to this site to listen, and you will have to check back from time to time to see if we’ve released any more episodes you might like. To make things a little more convenient, sign up using the form provided (it’s on every page on the right-hand side) and we will send you an email notice with a link back to the site when we release new episodes.
If you are happy with this arrangement, then this is all you need to know. That’s easy, right?
Cooler, But Not As Easy
You can make things more convenient, actually really convenient, if you are willing to deal with a little more complexity. Listening devices like Apple’s iPod (which put the “pod” in “podcast”), allow you to subscribe to what’s called a podcast feed. By doing so, the podcast will show up on your iPod automatically when a new episode is released.
Here’s how it works: A podcast feed is just a text file on the internet that stores a podcast’s information - like the title of the podcast and where its audio file can be found on the Internet.
Our podcast feed is located at: http://www.implementchangenow.com/feed
When we release a new episode of the podcast, we update this text file with the new information. An audio device connected to the Internet can check the file from time to time to see if it’s changed; if so, then it knows a new episode is available, and it will download the new file. Next time you check your device (for an iPod, youe iTunes installation), it’ll be there.
Pretty cool, right?
What makes things a little more difficult is that different devices go about this process in different ways. The most popular at this point is the iPod approach. The iPod is partnered with the free computer software iTunes; you actually use iTunes to subscribe to podcasts. iTunes checks the feeds for updates and performs the downloads when it they occur. When you synch the iPod with iTunes, the new podcasts are loaded. Find out more on: http://www.apple.com/itunes/whatson/podcasts/
